Tools, tips & tricks: A clever way for ‘recipe hoarders’ to get organized

Christen Olivarez, Editor-in-Chief of Stampington & Co., shares a simple, easy and inexpensive way to organize and access the recipes she collects.

I’m a bit of a recipe hoarder. I clip them from magazines, print them off the computer, and write them down whenever a friend shares one with me.

The problem with that is that all of my recipes, each a different size and shape, where getting incredibly cluttered and I couldn’t find anything. What I’ve found to work best for me is to clip recipes down to size, and tape them to a sheet of white paper with a cute piece of Happy Tape. They then get inserted into a plastic sleeve for protection from the mess I tend to make. Having them stored this way makes it easy to switch them out or add more.

All the recipes in the plastic have been tried and deemed delicious. For those recipes we have yet to try, we clip them and shove them in a sleeve. If they’re successful, they get taped down onto a page of their own. If they’re a flop, they get tossed.

  1. I love this idea! I’ve *just* started trying my hand at cooking (trying to dip my toe into the whole “being a grown up” thing at the age of 29) and I have so many recipes I’ve printed out that are all over the place. I’ve been trying to think of a solution. Definitely going to do this, and I love the happy tape the most. HA!

This IS a great idea! I’ve been doing this with my recipes (minus the cute tape - gonna have to get some now) for years. I have so many recipes that I’ve had to sort them in to separate binders.

  3. Thank you Christen….you should see my recipe box!
Jammed with recipe clippings all folded into one big ball.I think my daughter would so love to do this project for me.

I love this idea. This is very similar to how I organize my recipes, but I have been leaving the recipes in the back of the binder until I’ve tried them out. When they are successful, I’ll slide them into a plastic sleeve. Your idea means that I won’t accidently dump 40 recipes on the floor while I’m working. Thanks so much for the tip!
